Mission:
The goal of the Cayman Sea Sense Project is to promote the
conservation of fishery resources and to help consumers
make informed and enviornmentally positive seafood choices.
What
is sustainable seafood?
A
species that is abundant and resilient to fishing pressures.
A
species that is well managed with a comprehensive management
plan based on current research.
A
species that is harvested in a method that ensures limited
by-catch or non-target and endangered species.
A
species that has a method of catch which ensures there is
limited habitat loss associated with the harvesting method.
Description
of the Cayman Sea Sense Project:
The
Cayman Sea Sense project will work with local restaurants
to ask them in identifying sustainable seafood options for
their menus. At these restaurants, consumers can choose
seafood menu items which have the Cayman Sea Sense icon
beside them.
Participating
restaurant will join the program as a Cayman Sea Sense member
by promoting and serving a sustainable seafood item.
Activities
will also place emphasis on education about the availability
of local and sustainable seafood. Restaurants are
encouraged to more frequently include these items on their
menu.
